With New Arbitrum Orbit Integration, EigenDA and AltLayer Bring Horizontal Scalability to the Ethereum Ecosystem

Feb 2, 2024 – EigenLabs, along with Offchain Labs and AltLayer, today announced EigenDA support for Arbitrum Orbit chains, bringing scalability to the Ethereum ecosystem without sacrificing on security. The integration offers developers the ability to build EigenDA-based Orbit rollups that bridge from Arbitrum One, Arbitrum Nova, and Ethereum, and boast lower transaction fees and higher transaction volume.

Arbitrum Orbit is the permissionless path for building rollups with the same software that powers Arbitrum's Layer 2 chains Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova. This integration further enables developers to store L2 transaction data in the EigenDA data availability layer, scaling the maximum transaction throughput from kilobytes per second to megabytes per second, at a fraction of the cost of Ethereum calldata.

EigenDA support for Orbit was made possible through a development partnership with AltLayer, which offers rollup deployment and sequencer hosting services as well as a suite of services for adding decentralized sequencing, fast finality and state-root verification support to rollups.

The EigenDA + Arbitrum Orbit integration launches without fraud proofs, a feature planned for release before EigenDA mainnet. Fraud proof support is important for minimizing trust in the rollup sequencer.

EigenDA is a secure, high throughput, horizontally-scaled and decentralized data availability (DA) service built on top of Ethereum using the EigenLayer’s restaking primitive. Developed by EigenLabs, EigenDA will be the first actively validated service (AVS) to launch on EigenLayer. Ethereum stakers will be able to delegate stake to node operators performing validation tasks for EigenDA in exchange for service payments, and rollups will be able to post data to EigenDA in order to access lower transaction fees for users, reserve bandwidth for lower fee volatility, and higher transaction throughput that scales horizontally with operator count. Furthermore EigenDA offers rollups the ability to pay in their own token as well as utilize their native token in an additional dual quorum setup for securing the DA layer.

“The future of data availability is scaling application development for Ethereum,” said Sreeram Kannan, CEO at EigenLabs. “We are delighted to work with the Arbitrum ecosystem to enable Orbit chains to achieve high throughput while being secured by ETH and their rollup token under the dual quorum model. In addition to data availability, we are also looking forward to enable cross-composable protocols among the Orbits to inherit security via Eigenlayer.”

“We are excited to welcome EigenDA into the Arbitrum ecosystem, enabling secure, cost-effective data availability for Orbit chains. Launching a blockchain has never been more flexible and accessible,” said Austin Marrazza from Offchain Labs. “This addition to their platform represents a significant step forward in the Ethereum ecosystem for rollup developers wishing to participate in the Arbitrum ecosystem. We’re excited to see how this new feature will enhance the growing demand for EigenDA in the Arbitrum ecosystem."

“On the road to mass adoption of Ethereum, we need to provide thousands of rollups for various apps in a fast, cost-efficient, secure and decentralized manner,” said YQ, founder of AltLayer. “With a production-ready integration of Arbitrum's Orbit and EigenDA, we've made a huge leap towards the goal. It's been a pleasure to work with the Arbitrum and EigenLabs team on making this possible. We're excited to leverage this integration to help more rollups scale their businesses via AltLayer.”

About EigenLabs

EigenLabs is the research organization leading development of EigenDA and EigenLayer. Founded by Sreeram Kannan, EigenLabs is backed by Blockchain Capital, Polychain Capital, Ethereal Ventures, and more.

About Offchain Labs

Offchain Labs is a venture-backed, Princeton-founded company that has dedicated over 5 years to blockchain research and development. As the original developers of the Arbitrum technology, Offchain has been instrumental in revolutionizing the industry through this leading network scaling solutions. The team continues to build upon this foundation by innovating and enhancing products such as Arbitrum Orbit, Stylus, BOLD, and Arbitrum Nitro.  In October 2022, Offchain Labs acquired Prysmatic Labs, the leading consensus client for Ethereum, further cementing Offchain Labs alignment with Ethereum.

About AltLayer

Founded in 2021, AltLayer is a decentralized protocol that facilitates the launch of native and restaked rollups with both optimistic and zk rollup stacks. Our solutions strengthen on-chain functionality at every level - sequencing, execution, and verification.

Built atop this protocol, AltLayer also offers a no-code Rollups-as-a-Service (RaaS) launchpad that allows anyone to spin up a customized rollup within 2 minutes with only a few simple clicks. The RaaS launchpad is designed for a multi-chain and a multi-VM world. It supports different rollup SDKs such as OP Stack, Arbitrum Orbit, Polygon zkEVM CDK, and zkSync Hyperchain among others.
